I learned about the structure (hierarchy, class system, etc) of people in relation to the castle in Medieval Europe:

• King hires knights to protect himself
• Gives them fiefs in return for their fealty
• These knights may later become nobles and hire their own knights, give them land in exchange for fealty
• The knights hire (enslave) serfs to work the land
• serfs are tied to the land are property of the knight
